Moving 40 tonnes of heavy oil and gas equipment

Our award-winning cargo team made light work of transporting over 40 tonnes of oil and gas equipment from Norway to Australia. The consignment included a 25-tonne top drive device that was urgently needed for an oil rig, so we used our unrivalled expertise to plan a specialist solution for the outsize load.

Our Solution

Route: Oslo > Perth

Aircraft: Ilyushin Il-76

We quickly located a heavy transport plane that was available to move the sizable shipment at short notice, before assisting the operator with securing a landing permit for Australia.

Due to the cargo’s weight and the length of the journey, several fuel stops were needed in Turkey, Oman, India and Indonesia.

We worked with our freight forwarder to source specialist equipment for loading and unloading the cargo. The smaller crates were moved using a forklift, while the heavy top drive was lowered onto a 20-foot pallet on a flat-bed trailer and secured with chains. The trailer reversed up to the aircraft’s ramp, where the cargo was winched onto a conveyor belt of wood and steel pipes before being pulled into the main hold.

The Finer Details

Flight Representation: A member of our cargo team in London travelled on the charter from Oslo to Perth, overseeing the operation throughout and quickly resolving any issues that arose.

Flexible Solution: We obtained emergency visas when a technical issue with the aircraft used up the remaining crew duty for the day, turning the fuel stop in Chennai into a crew rest.
