Spotlight: Saab 340. The Goldilocks Freighter.
After years satisfying the regional airline boom of the 80s and 90s, the Saab 340 gained traction with a second lease of life in regional cargo shipments.
Filling a gap in the market where other aircraft were too big or too small for purpose, the Saab 340 is a goldilocks size that continues to deliver practical operational efficiency.
Originally introduced in the early 1980s, the Saab 340 initially connected passengers from small towns to major hub airports. However, the rise of regional jets and demand for larger capacity brought its passenger career to a close.
Fortunately the cargo industry recognised its capability, heralding the 340’s revival as a regional freighter.
Of 459 Saab 340s produced, 300 were the enhanced 340B and B Plus (representing the bulk of today’s active fleet). With the 340B (F) conversion solidifying the Saab 340’s modern role as a formidable regional cargo performer.
Robust Scandinavian engineering
Informed by Swedish military fighter jet expertise, the Saab 340 is designed to withstand the Nordic winter extremes, where temperatures routinely drop below minus 20°C.
This resilience is achieved through:
- Pneumatic de-icing boots that shed ice on the wing and stabiliser leading edges, allowing airflow to cleanly sweep it away;
- Engine anti-ice systems combining electrical heating and bleed air, protecting intakes in severe conditions;
- An adhesive-bonded structure replacing thousands of rivets, reducing potential points of cracking and corrosion.
The Saab 340’s durability is proven – having been fatigue tested past 200,000 cycles, most 340s available for charter are currently only halfway to their 90,000 cycle legal limit.
Key facts and stats
- Maiden flight: 1983
- Introduction: 1984
- Main hold size (L x W x H): 110 x 162 x 175 cm / 437 x 63 x 68 in

- Door size (W x H): 135 x 130 cm / 53 x 51in
Features:
- Operational simplicity and reliability thanks to Saab’s prioritisation of rugged mechanical linkages and modular engine design, the 340 is remarkably field friendly.
- High dispatch reliability, Saab states a dispatch reliability rate of over 99%, supported by its FAR Part 25 certification, meaning tight schedules and delivery promises can be fulfilled.
- Economical in operation, hitting the ‘ton-mile’ efficiency sweet spot in an industry where every kilogram matters.
The Saab 340’s true advantage is its size
The 340 is perfectly proportioned for express freight, combining:
- A 3.8-tonne payload capability;
- A usable volume of 36m³; and
- A generous box-like cabin.
The 340’s near-square cargo hold cross-section that closely matches the door opening makes it the ideal size for bulk loading, giving it a rare ability among smaller regional turboprops to accommodate unusually large or bulky cargo.
This, in turn, has made it a trusted choice for AOG support and a dependable performer in hub-and-spoke networks.
