CITY GUIDE SEVILLE

Private jet charter and flights to Seville

Capital of the southern Spanish Andalusia region, sun-soaked Seville is an enchanting city famous for its seductive flamenco rhythms, fantastic food and ancient ruins. The best way to experience Spain’s fourth-largest city is to do as the locals do, whether that’s tucking into freshly-made tapas in a crowded bar or dancing the night away in one of the many flamenco clubs. Top tip: avoid visiting Europe’s hottest city during the scorching summer months; instead come in shoulder season for warm but not unbearable temperatures. Despite its size, Seville is compact and easily walkable. Head first for the city’s historic heart, El Centro, which is riddled with incredible architecture linked by winding medieval lanes. The city was once a Moorish capital and you can explore the relics of this rich past, admiring grand aristocratic houses and magnificent Mudéjar palaces like the imposing Alcázar of Seville. Thought to house the remains of explorer Christopher Columbus, Seville’s Gothic cathedral is the world’s largest and you can climb its 12th-century bell tower for giddying views over the city. Take some time to get lost in the labyrinthine cobbled streets of Barrio Santa Cruz, the famous old Jewish quarter with its tree-lined squares and colourful buildings.

Seville’s incredible architecture is dotted all over the city. The Fine Arts Museum, which houses an impressive collection of works by legendary artists like El Greco and Velázquez, is housed in a breathtaking former convent behind the Plaza de Armas; while the 13th-century Golden Tower is a historic watchtower where a naval museum is now based. The public can also explore Pilate’s House, a 16th-century Andalusian palace complete with ornate tiles, a stunning Mudéjar honeycomb ceiling and a pretty courtyard.

The formerly troubled Macarena neighbourhood is today a hip enclave buzzing with cool cocktail bars, pulsating nightclubs and fantastic restaurants. Witness another transformation across the river in Triana; which has morphed from a downtrodden working-class quarter into an atmospheric hub where you’ll get a true taste of quintessential Seville life. Take an early-morning stroll across the Bridge of Isabel II for beautiful views of the city’s skyline; sip beer at one of the many little bars lining the riverside Calle Betis; and wander through the frenetic covered market with its stalls of produce, meat and fish.

When you need a break from Seville’s crowded streets and bustling attractions, head for the tranquillity of Maria Luisa Park. In this beautiful botanical garden you can retreat from the heat under a shady tree or take a horse-drawn carriage ride along winding paths, discovering stunning squares, covered walkways and pretty water features. Visit two excellent museums – The Archaeological Museum and The Museum of Art and Popular Customs – or head to the edge of the park and admire Plaza de España, a spectacular building that featured in Game of Thrones.
